THE EVENT
The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend is an amateur radio event held on the third weekend of August. The event started in 1995, and now more than 420 lighthouses in over 50 countries participate each year.
The objective of ILLW is stated as "to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, to promote amateur radio and to foster International goodwill"
The event was started by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in 1995 as the "Northern Lighthouse Activity Weekend", with stations being set up at Scottish lighthouses. In 1997, to reflect participation by Danish and German amateur radio groups the event took on its current name. The event now sees worldwide participation.
The basic format of the event is that a local amateur radio club will set up a radio station either in, or adjacent to, a lighthouse. They will then broadcast from that station over the weekend, with the goal being contact other amateur stations, particularly those operating from other lighthouse sites. There is no fixed format, and no competition (such as contacting the most number or most distant stations);
THE STATION
After a succesfull participation in 2010, the Harderwijk Light aka “De Vischpoort’ will participate in the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend again in 2011.
The special callsign for the lighthouse is PG6HK. The station will operate on HF as well as on 2 meter.

HARDERWIJK LIGHT
The light is also known as “De Vischpoort”
This lighthouse is also the town gate. The building dates back to the late 14th century, and it became a gate in 1592. The actual building is established in 1851. The light is believed to have been discontinued sometime in the late 1950s, when the land reclamation program was started in the area of the Zuiderzee that became the southeastern Flevoland polder.

THE CITY OF HARDERWIJK
Harderwijk has a rich history, which can be seen all over the town.The town wall still stands proud and strong, and remains of the town’s past can be seen everywhere. In the centre of the town are the buildings of the former university and cloisters, and the grand homes of prominent merchants can be seen at various locations throughout the town. In its long history, Harderwijk has been a member of the Hanseatic League, a seat of academia, a garrison town and a fishing port. Artefacts from this rich history are on display in the town museum (Stadsmuseum) in the Donkerstraat. However, what is even better is that many of these ancient buildings have found a new use as shop, restaurant, art gallery or residential complex. In this way these buildings have a new function and every right to exist in today's town. The sound of the blacksmith's hammer can once again be heard in the shipbuilding yard, and there are ships on the slipway once more. The lighthouse of the Vischpoort, formerly a beacon for fishermen, shines out just as it used to. Harderwijk may have changed a great deal through the centuries, but much that was beautiful has been retained.
